Amstrad CPC - Booting
|
Screenshot (click for large image) | Description | | Booting SymbOS from ROM
SymbOS can be booted from disc or from ROM. If you install the roms (4 x 16K) you will get a start message when switching on or resetting the CPC. With a short RSX-command you can boot SymbOS within only 3 seconds. | | Booting SymbOS from Disc
Even booting SymbOS from disc is very fast. The boot loader is based on the SymbOS file manager and needs not much more than 10 seconds to load SymbOS on a normal CPC. This is even faster than booting CP/M Plus! | | Empty desktop after booting
This is how the desktop appears after booting SymbOS. Some default icons are already pre-configured. | | Desktop with background picture
With a background picture the desktop looks much more nice. The user can also add his own icons or replace the existing ones. If you own a CPC with only 128K, you shouldn't install a desktop background picture, as you won't be able to run several bigger applications. |

Screenshot (click for large image) | Description | | Start menu
The start menu of SymbOS is very similiar to the one of Windows. With the help of the start menu all important system features and favourite applications can be reached very fast. The "program" sub menu can be filled with any entry you like. | | SymbOS in action
This is, how SymbOS looks, when many applications have been started and executed at the same time. It's a very impressive demonstration of the CPCs power and capabilities! | | High resolution
SymbOS works with both reasonable resolution. This is SymbOS running in CPC Mode 2, which means 640 x 200 pixels and 2 colours. As you can see, now there is very much place on the screen, and you can still see and read everything, as the colour model is designed even to work with only 2 colours. |

Amstrad CPC - Graphical User Interface
|
Screenshot (click for large image) | Description | | Maximized window
Windows can be maximized or restored. This may happen with a double click on the title bar or with a click on the responsible icon at the upper right edge of the window. You also may open the window control menu by clicking with the right mouse button on the window button in the task bar, as you can see on this screen shot. | | Moving a window
When you move a window to another position on the screen, an animated border apears and helps you to reach the new position. | | Resizing a window
Again an animated border appears, when you resize the window. | | Dynamic display of the window content
The sizes, positions and alignments of the controls and elements inside a window can depend on the size of the window. This makes it possible to have the same content appereance for totally different window sizes. This example shows the SymCommander application in two different sizes. | | Moving an icon
You can also pick up an icon and move it to another position inside its window. In this example the user changed the position of the desktop icons. |

Amstrad CPC - Miscellaneous

Screenshot (click for large image) | Description | | Run dialogue
Applications can be started in many ways. The most simple way is to use the "run" feature of the start menu. | | File select dialogue
The file select dialogue can be used by every application for choosing directories and files. It supports drive and sub directory browsing and file masks. In this example it is used by the run dialogue. | | "About SymbOS" window
The "About" window shows the product credits, and here I am also sending thanksgivings and greetings to some of the nice members of the international CPC scene. | | Shut down SymbOS
The shutdown dialogue. At the moment option two and three will end in the same result - the CPC will be resetted. | | SymbOS security dialogue
The system security dialogue appears, when you press ALT+CONTROL+CLR (on the CPC alt is the copy key). | | Change login and password
With the system security dialogue you can call the dialogue for changing the current login and password. Of course for security reasons you have to type the new password two times. | | SymbOS has been locked
"This computer is in use and has been locked". This well known window can be seen on our beloved Z80 now, too. |
