X11R6.3
Mark <mark@ibiblio.org>
What is it
X11R6.3 is a free release of the MIT X11 Windowing system from the X Consortium.
I've offered it here for those who want to use the standard X11 system because
they like it or they want to compile with it etc.
The Solaris 2.5.1 x86 package has been compiled from the XFree86 3.3.3 source
tree. You should follow the installation instructions mentioned below to
correctly, and safely, install and configure this package.
The Solaris 2.6 x86 package has not been compiled by me. It is a direct copy
of the XFree86 3.2.2.2 Solaris 2.6 binary tree from ftp.xfree86.org. The binaries
have been unpacked and installed into a system, the X server linked to the
SVGA one for compatibility and the kit packaged up. You will have to run
XF86Setup, SuperProbe
and xf86config to configure the
installation before you should attempt to xdm
or startx. Look at the help files in
/usr/local/X11R6.3/lib/X11/doc.

Solaris Issues
X11R6.3 is custom compiled for the operating system it lives on. Running on
a Solaris release other than the one it was installed on would have undefined
results. It may work, but it's not supported. You'll find the package setup
won't allow you to complete the install anyway in this case.

Source Code
You can download the XFree86 3.3.3 source from
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/3.3.3/source/.
You can download the Solaris 2.6 x86 binaries in their raw form from
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/3.3.2/binaries/Solaris/.
The X11R6.3 source code can be found at ftp://ftp.x.org/pub/R6.3/tars/.
However, it's better if you use a mirror site.
