IBM Director Version 3.1 December, 2001 CONTENTS -------- 1.0 Overview 2.0 Change History 3.0 Installation and Setup Instructions 4.0 Configuration Information 5.0 Unattended Mode 6.0 Web Sites and Support Phone Number 7.0 Trademarks and Notices 8.0 Disclaimer 1.0 Overview ------------- IBM Director version 3.1, consisting of new or updated agents, support for new hardware, and new functionality. 1.1 Limitations: Inventory tables for Rack Manager contain no data ------------------------------------------------- When performing an inventory collection on all systems and devices and you view inventory once the collection is complete the queries for Rack Member Properties, Rack Membership, and Rack Properties contain no data. This is because Rack Manager does not write to the Inventory Table. The three tables mentioned are populated by Rack Manager activities such as creating a rack, adding members etc. Setting the Locale of the Linux Director Agent ---------------------------------------------- The Linux Director Agent runs in the context of the enviroment under which it is started, including the locale. At boot time, the agent automatically assumes the primary locale of the system. However, if the agent is manually restarted under a locale different from the original, data may not be displayed correctly. When restarting the agent from a console or terminal, the administrator must ensure that the desired locale is set properly. (The set locale may be determined with the 'locale' Linux command.) If the desired locale is incorrect, e.g. under Turbolinux running the locale ja_JP.eucJP, where a console session where POSIX is set, the administrator must set the locale as follows before restarting the agent. From the bash command line, type: export LANG=locale where 'locale' is the desired setting. In the example, the resulting command is export LANG=ja_JP.eucJP'. Director default install language ------------------------- Director installs in the language of the systems default locale. If a user wishes to install a different location/language the DEFAULT locale must be changed. Two ways exist for changing the default location: 1. Modify the Default key of : SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Nls\\Language located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. 2. Open Regional Settings in the Control Panel and change the locale to the one desired and set it as default. Red Hat 6.2 Linux Distrubution will not upgrade Director 2.2 tools ------------------------------------------------------------------ When performing a software distribution to a Red Hat system with Director 2.2 and all Tools installed, the Director install script upgrades the rpms until it reaches the install ASM or Raid. These tools produce an error message about the packages already being installed and are then skipped. The other tools install as they are new to Director 3.1 for linux and were not present in the last build. The ASM and Raid tools must be removed from Red Hat 6.2 before attemting to upgrade install to Director 3.1 via the Linux Software distrubution. Using TWGRESET -------------- When using the TWGRESET command you must use the -d option. 1.2 Enhancements: 2.0 Change History -------------------- See the Troubleshooting Guide for more information. 3.0 Installation and Setup Instructions ----------------------------------------- *NOTE: Administrator privilege is required to install Director. 3.4 Limitations See the Troubleshooting Guide for more information. Director Console not supported on default VGA drivers ------------------------------------------------------------------ Director console is not supported on Win32 systems running a default VGA driver. Video drivers must be installed correctly for Director Console to work. Also the minimum recommended screen resolution for properly formatting Direstor windows is 800X600. For some national language versions of Director, 1024X768 may be required. Installation caveats for Windows XP ----------------------------------- The installation of Director Agent on Windows XP systems produces popup messages, which at times can be hidden behind the installation window. These popup messages prohibit the installation from continuing. To check for a hidden popup message use ALT-Tab to step through the active windows. Installation of Director Agent on Windows XP systems cannot be performed in silent or unattended mode because of these popup messages. When receiving these popup messages, click Yes to install the drivers needed for the Director Agent and when the installation is complete the message to click Finish is displayed. Clicking Finish reboots your system. Unfortunately, upon reboot, the system finds hardware that should have been installed prior to the reboot and will not install correctly. To alleviate this situation the user must answer No to the restart after the install finishes and wait for approximately 5 minutes or more while new hardware is found. Click Next on each hardware popup message. A wait of up to 40 seconds between one driver install and the system finding new hardware, making it very misleading that it is ok to reboot. 4.0 Configuration Information ------------------------------- See the Troubleshooting Guide for more information. 5.0 Unattended Mode -------------------- See the Troubleshooting Guide for more information. 6.0 WEB Sites and Support Phone Number --------------------------------------- 6.1 IBM Support Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/support 6.2 IBM Netfinity Systems Management Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/ww/netfinity/systems_management/index.html 6.3 IBM Enterprise Support page for electronic support: http://www.pc.ibm.com/ww/solutions/enterprise/support/index.html 6.4 IBM Marketing Netfinity Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/netfinity 6.5 If you have any questions about this update, or problems applying the update go to the following Help Center World Telephone Numbers URL: http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/YAST-3P2QLY.html. 7.0 Trademarks and Notices ---------------------------- 7.1 The following terms are trademarks of the IBM Corporation in the United States or other countries or both: The following product names are trademarks of IBM Corporation or Tivoli Systems: AIX, IBM, Netfinity, Director, Director Agent, and Tivoli Management Environment.
