---------------------------------------------------------------------- Software Name BIOS Update CD (ISO image file for bootable CD) Support models ThinkPad Z61e, Z61m, Z61p, Z61t Operating Systems Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit, 64-bit (*1) Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Professional Microsoft Windows 2000 Refer to marketing materials to find out what ThinkPad models support which Operating Systems. Version 2.22 Issue date October 26, 2007 *1: Windows Vista 64-bit supports Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processors only. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT THIS PACKAGE DOES This package updates the BIOS (including system program and Embedded Controller program) stored in the ThinkPad computer to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. In order to enable the BIOS update by booting the computer from the CD-R/CD-RW disc, disregarding the operating system, this package is compiled into an ISO image file which is compatible with CD-R/CD-RW writing software. For that purpose, it is necessary to have the CD-R/CD-RW writing software (with CD-R/CD-RW creation function from the ISO image file) prepared separately. This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE Version 2.22 [Important updates] Nothing. [New functions or enhancements] - Function enhancement of capturing the BIOS configuration information on the computer by BIOS Settings Capture/Playback Utility. [Problem fixes] - Once a fingerprint matching fails on the fingerprint sensor at power-on time, a power-on password prompt may appear immediately without retries of fingerprint detection. - Fingerprint matching fails on the fingerprint sensor at power-on time if a USB device is detached from the computer during fingerprint's authentication. - The computer may hang at the power-on if device configuration is changed in the BIOS Setup immediately after resuming normal operation from hibernation mode. - An error may occur at the power-on after ThinkPad BIOS Settings for Windows runs and then the computer goes into hibernation mode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check the BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES - In order to enable the BIOS update by booting the computer from the CD-R/CD-RW disc, it is necessary to prepare the CD-R/CD-RW writing software, such as RecordNow! writing software. If your version of RecordNow! does not have a "Burn Image" entry, upgrade RecordNow! from the following site. http://www.lenovo.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-43887 - The CD-R/CD-RW disc for the BIOS update does not support any optical disc drives connected through USB devices, PC Cards, CardBus cards or installed into the Ultrabay of the Docking Station. It only supports internal CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD Combo and DVD Multi drives on the ThinkPad systems. - To boot the computer from an internal optical disc drive, your ThinkPad computer may need to change the boot device setting. Refer to the "Prepare boot device" section in this document. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CREATING THE BIOS UPDATE CD 1. Make sure you have a ThinkPad system with a CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD combo, or DVD multidrive installed and a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc. 2. Start Windows Vista, XP, 2000 and logon with administrative privileges. 3. Download the ISO file. 4. For Windows Vista, click Start, then click Start Search. For Windows XP, 2000, click Start, then click Run... 5. Specify the path where you downloaded the file, then click OK. RecordNow! or the default recording software will open. Example: C:\temp\7fuj22uc.iso 6. Follow the instructions on the screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PREPARING THE BOOT DEVICE Confirm that an Optical Disc Drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup. 1. Power off the computer. 2. Power on the computer. 3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. Note the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list. 6. In "Boot Priority Order", set "ATAPI CD0" to the top of the list, "1". 7. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes. 8. Restart the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATING THE BIOS Notes: - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter, a charged battery pack and an either of internal CD-RW, CD-RW & DVD Combo or DVD Multi drive for ThinkPad to to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment. Attention: Do not turn off, suspend the computer or remove the BIOS UPDATE CD until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. 1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 2. Make sure an either of internal CD-RW, CD-RW & DVD Combo or DVD Multi drive for ThinkPad is installed into the computer. 3. Insert the BIOS Update CD into the drive and turn on the computer. 4. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information. 5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 6. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. 7.
