[Problem fixes] Nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED There are two ways for version check. (A) On Windows (B) On BIOS Setup Utility (A) On Windows 1. Start the ThinkPad Configuration program. Click Start, select All Programs (or Programs), select ThinkVantage, and then click ThinkPad Configuration. 2. Click the System Information icon. 3. Click the BIOS information tab. BIOS version and Embedded Controller version will be displayed. 4. Click OK to exit. (B) On BIOS Setup Utility 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES - This package is for Machine Type 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894 and 2895 of ThinkPad R51. For the other machine types of ThinkPad R51, please get the package for them. - This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher. Obtain the additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher, and update the Embedded Controller Program in the system with it. - If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update BIOS first. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATING BIOS Notes: - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. There are three ways for installation. (A) Automatic update with Software Installer (B) Manual update (C) Unattended update (A) Automatic Update with Software Installer Use Software Installer version 3.01.0503 or higher. Software Installer will check both installed program in your ThinkPad and our Web site, then download and update the program automatically if a newer version is available. Refer to the Software Installer package for details. (B) Manual Update Refer to the Manual Update section. (C) Unattended Update Refer to the Unattended Update section. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INITIALIZING BIOS BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. 8. Power off or restart the computer. Infrared: Config -> Infrared -> Infrared Device <1.27> (1VET69WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher. - (Fix) Intel Pentium M Processor and Centrino logos displayed on screen after power-on is modified. - (Fix) The computer may hang if the hard disk drive is damaged. <1.25> (1VET67WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher. - (Fix) A CardBus Controller setting was wrong. - (Fix) The computer may hang up when a boot device is changed in Startup menu of BIOS Setup Utility. <1.24> (1VET66WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher. - (Fix) With the BIOS version 1.23 (1VET65WW), the system will shut down on Wake On Lan with an Ultrabay Slim Second HDD adapter, even if no password is set in the second HDD. - (Fix) Powering off at a password prompt with a newly attached USB storage device, an error appears on power-on. - (Fix) The system may not start with some USB devices, attached to docking station or port replicator. <1.23> (1VET65WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher. - (New) Enhancement of security function on power-on: When hard disk password is set, regardless of other passwords settings, Wake On Lan from power off state does not work. - (Fix) Corrections based on Intel 852GME HPLLCC errata. <1.22> (1VET64WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher. - (New) MPU microcode update. - (Fix) Some BIOS Setup menu items are not copied with using a Remote CMOS Update Utility. <1.21> (1VET63WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher. - (New) MPU microcode update. - (Fix) Input process of the supervisor password is improved. <1.20> (1VET62WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher. - (Fix) The clock frequency (speed) of CPU is not set to the highest speed in battery mode even if "Intel(R) SpeedStep technology" option of "Power" of "Config" in the "IBM BIOS Setup Utility" menu is set to Enabled and its "Mode for Battery" option is set to "Maximum Performance". <1.19> (1VET61WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher. - (Fix) An E228 error may be displayed after the computer is powered on. <1.17> (1VET59WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 or higher. - (New) Internal Network device enable/disable function is added in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. - (New) Internal Wireless device enable/disable function is added in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. - (New) Intel Centrino Logo is updated. - (New) Support for Bluetooth models of ThinkPad R51 (M/T 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894 and 2895). - (Fix) The memory data will be corrupted if timer resume is aborted when "Timer Wake with Battery Operation" option in IBM BIOS Setup Utility is disabled. - (Fix) The system hangs when booted from the 2nd FDD in boot order. - (Fix) Old version of IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter software (Version 2.4.1.7 or elders) may not work. <1.16> (1VET58WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.02. - (Fix) The computer may be immediately powered off at the password prompt screen after returning from hibernation if the Power- on Password is set and the "Require password after hibernate" option in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility is set to Enabled. - (Fix) The correct passphrase is not accepted at the passphrase prompt screen of the UVM (User Verification Manager) function of the IBM Client Security Software after returning from standby mode if all of the following conditions are met: 1. "Timer Wake with Battery Operation" option in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility is set to disabled. 2. In the Windows XP Power Options properties, both "System standby" and "System hibernates" for "Running on batteries" are set. The timer setting of "System hibernates" is longer than that of "System standby". 3. The computer is running on the battery. 4. The computer goes into standby mode by following the timer setting of the "System Standby" option, and then is in idling state longer than the time which is set in the "System hibernates" option. 5. Let the computer resume normal operation from standby mode. - --- Support for a new revision of power management chip on the system board. <1.11> (1VET53WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.02. - (New) Support for a new option, "Require password after hibernate" in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility. This is to enable/disable for the computer to prompt for the Power-on password when the system starts from hibernate. Go to the Require password after hibernate option under Security and Password in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility, and refer to Item Specific Help for details. - (New) Support for a new option, "Timer Wake with Battery Operation" in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility. This is to enable/disable scheduled wake up events if the computer is not connected to the AC adapter. Go to the Timer Wake with Battery Operation option under Config and Power in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility, and refer to Item Specific Help for details. <1.03> (1VET45WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.02. - (New) Support for the Intel Pentium M Processor 715, 725 and 735 - (Fix) USB mass storage set by Startup menu in IBM BIOS Setup may not be booted on some Operating Systems other than Windows and DOS. - (Fix) Bootable CD may boot slowly. - (Fix) Setting of an IDE device in a docking station may be wrong. <1.01 (1VET39WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00. - (New) (Initial release) Support for ThinkPad R51 (M/T 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894 and 2895). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MANUAL UPDATE This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Explorer. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. Downloading files 1. Click once on the underlined file name with the left mouse button. Once this is done, a pop-up window will appear. 2. In this pop-up window, choose (using the left mouse button) the directory you would like to download the file to and click the "Save" button. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete without your assistance. 3. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully. Updating the BIOS 4. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 5. Make sure to be logged on with administrative privileges. 6. Open an Explorer and locate the directory where the file was saved. 7. Double-click the saved file. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen will appears. 9. Select "Read this first..." from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 10. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 11. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Finally delete the file saved in the step 2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UNATTENDED UPDATE This procedure is intended only for system administrators. - Refer to the Manual Install section, and download and extract the files. - At the command line, execute the BIOS Update Utility (xxxxxxxx.exe) with the -s -a -s options. (For example) [Path where the files were extracted]\xxxxxxxx.exe -s -a -s The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BIOS INFORMATION Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others. C0000-CCFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS CD000-CEFFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*1) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Note: *1: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows operating systems. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. CF000-DBFFF Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems.
