PANTONE* COLOR CALIBRATION FILES FOR THE QMS MAGICOLOR CX PRINT SYSTEM ===================================== The PANTONE Color palette files on this disk can be read directly into commonly used PC applications, so you can have printer- calibrated versions of all PANTONE Colors. These files were calibrated by a color scientist at Pantone, Inc. especially for the QMS magicolor CX print system. When a Pantone color scientist color calibrates a printer, he or she develops a custom CMYK combination for every color in the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM (coated stock only) except metallics, fluorescents, and double impressions. This calibration is done visually because this method is more accurate than automated color matching routines. For example, a mathematically generated PANTONE Color simulation may look fine under incandescent light but wrong under fluorescent light. Since every printer can't achieve every PANTONE Color, the color scientist finds the closest possible simulation of each color. For this reason, the PANTONE Color simulation files on this disk are are calibrated only for the QMS magicolor CX. If you plan to create color separations, you must recolor your graphics using the built-in PANTONE Color tables supplied by your application. The QMS magicolor CX has two built-in halftones, ColorSmooth and Enhanced, both selectable through the configuration menu. (See the QMS magicolor CX documentation for a complete description of these halftones.) PANTONE Color palette files for both of these halftones are included on this disk for many commonly used PC applications. This readme file describes how to load each of these files into the appropriate application. Disk 1 Contents --------------- Disk 1 contains the following files. Each of these files is discussed in more detail in this readme file. Note: The last two letters of each palette filename identify the corresponding halftone: "CS" for ColorSmooth and "EN" for Enhanced. Encapsulated PostScript File (EPSF) Charts ------------------------------------------ Because there is no way in some applications to display the name of a selected PANTONE Color swatch in the PANTONE Color palettes, we have created a set of EPSF charts that contain all of the PANTONE Colors in the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. You can use these charts in any other image processing application that supports EPSF charts. 1. Copy the CXCSEPSF.EXE and CXENEPSF.EXE files to an appropriate directory on your computer's hard disk. 2. In the Windows File Manager, double-click on the CXCSEPSF.EXE filename. This is a self-extracting file that expands the EPSF charts for the ColorSmooth halftone to your hard disk. These files are named according to the pages where you can find the PANTONE Colors in the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. For example, CXCS0111.EPS contains the PANTONE Colors that are included on pages 1-11 of the Guide. 3. In the Windows File Manager, double-click on the CXENEPSF.EXE filename. This is a self-extracting file that expands the EPSF charts for the Enhanced halftone to your hard disk. If the Color List palette isn't displayed, from the Window menu choose Color List. 3. In FreeHand, from the Color List palette choose Options and then Import... 4. Select one of the color palettes you copied to the COLORS directory in step 1, and then choose OK. The Pantone palette window displays. Note: When the .ACF file is opened for the first time, FreeHand creates a binary version of the file with a .BCF extension. Micrografx Designer 4.0 ------------------------ 1. Copy the color palette files QMSMCXCS.PL4 and QMSMCXEN.PL4 to the DESIGNER directory. 2. In Designer, choose the Style Tool icon (the paint bucket). 3. Choose the Palette Options icon and then choose Palette Manager... 4. Choose Import... and select one of the color palettes you copied to the DESIGNER directory in step 1. QuarkXPress ----------- Because QuarkXPress doesn't support loadable palettes, we have created a set of EPS files that contain all of the PANTONE Colors in the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. Note: You can also use these files in any other image processing application that supports EPS files. Note: The PANTONE Color names in our EPS palettes have a space character in front of the word "PANTONE". Do not rename these colors without the space, or QuarkXPress will remap its default CMYK color values for PANTONE Colors to your magicolor-calibrated PANTONE Colors. 1. Copy the CXCSEPS.EXE and CXENEPS.EXE files to an appropriate directory on your computer's hard disk. 2. In the Windows File Manager, double-click on the CXCSEPS.EXE filename. This is a self-extracting file that expands the EPS files for the ColorSmooth halftone to your hard disk. These files are named according to the pages where you can find the PANTONE Colors in the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. For example, CXCS0111.EPS contains the PANTONE Colors that are included on pages 1-11 of the Guide. 3. In the Windows File Manager, double-click on the CXENEPS.EXE filename. This is a self-extracting file that expands the EPS files for the Enhanced halftone to your hard disk. These files are named according to the pages where you can find the PANTONE Colors in the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. For example, CXEN8592.EPS contains the PANTONE Colors that are included on pages 85-92 of the Guide. 4. In QuarkXPress open a new or existing document. 5. Using the Frame tool, create a frame in the document. 6. From the File menu choose Get Picture... and open one of the PANTONE EPS files. 7. From the View menu choose Show Colors, if necessary. The PANTONE Colors will display in the palette. The palette holds about 100 colors. To add more, delete any unused colors, and repeat steps 5-7. TIFF Files ---------- See also "Adobe Photoshop 3.0" and "Encapsulated PostScript File (EPSF) Charts," earlier in this readme file. Because there is no way in Photoshop to display the name of the selected PANTONE Color swatch in the PANTONE Color palettes, we have created a set of CMYK TIFF files that contain all of the PANTONE Colors in the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. Note: You can also use these files in any other image processing application that supports CMYK TIFF and CMYK image editions. 1. Copy the CXCSTIF.EXE and CXENTIF.EXE files to an appropriate directory on your computer's hard disk. 2. In the Windows File Manager, double-click on the CXCSTIF.EXE filename. This is a self-extracting file that expands the TIFF files for the ColorSmooth halftone to your hard disk. These files are named according to the pages where you can find the PANTONE Colors in the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. For example, CXCS0111.TIF contains the PANTONE Colors that are included on pages 1-11 of the Guide. 3. In the Windows File Manager, double-click on the CXENTIF.EXE filename. This is a self-extracting file that expands the TIFF files for the Enhanced halftone to your hard disk. These files are named according to the pages where you can find the PANTONE Colors in the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. For example, CXEN8592.TIF contains the PANTONE Colors that are included on pages 85-92 of the Guide. 4. In Photoshop (or any other image processing application that supports CMYK TIFF and CMYK image editions), open the appropriate TIF file. 5. In Photoshop, Use the eyedropper tool to grab the CMYK value and apply it to your palette or image. If you're using another image processing application, refer to your documentation. Note: Do not convert these images to RGB.
