The Avanstar ANDIS MAC provides the interface between a computer that functions as a LAN DistanceTM Connection Server and up to four Avanstar adapters. At this time, the Avanstar ANDIS MAC for OS/2 supports the following adapters: Adapter Architecture Avanstar Xi (200i) ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) Avanstar Xm (200m) Micro Channel 1.2 Driver Installation Follow these steps to install the Avanstar ANDIS MAC for OS/2 : 1. Follow the instructions in the IBM manual LAN Distance Advanced Guide to install and set up the LAN Distance Connection Server software. 2. When you have installed the LAN Distance Connection Server software, you must shut down and restart the system. Follow this procedure: (a) Place the cursor pointer on an empty space on the desktop and click the right button on the mouse. (b) Click (with the left button) on "Shut down". (c) Click "Yes" on the "OS/2 Full Screen" menu if you wish to continue the shutdown. (d) Press when you are prompted to do so. 3. Follow the adapter configuration and installation instructions in the Avanstar Family Hardware Installation Guide. NOTE Make sure that you record the switch settings for the I/O address assignment before you install an Avanstar Xi (200i). Avanstar Xm (200m) adapters do not have any hardware settings-these adapters are set up entirely with software. 4. Shut down and restart the system. 5. Install the Avanstar ANDIS MAC for OS/2 as follows: (a) Insert the installation diskette into the floppy disk drive. (b) Type a: or b: depending upon which drive the diskette was inserted into. (c) Type setup. This will load the setup/ configuration utility. (d) Indicate the drive letter of the hard disk where LAPS (Lan Adapter Protocol Support) is installed and the letter of the floppy drive which contains the diskette. The driver will be installed on the drive where LAPS is installed. 1.3 Driver Configuration For instructions on configuring the Avanstar ANDIS MAC for OS/2, go to the section that is applicable to your adapter: Adapter Architecture Section Avanstar Xm (200m) 1.3.1 Avanstar Xi (200i) 1.3.2 1.3.1 Avanstar Xm (200m) Configuration 1. Select Avanstar Xm (200m) in the "Select an Adapter to Install" listbox and click the "Install Adapter" button. 2. All fields in the "Installed Adapters" listbox will display "Auto". You can not change the Dual Port address and the IRQ assignments with the driver. If you wish to change the dual port address or the IRQ assignment for an Avanstar Xm (200m) adapter, you must reconfigure the adapter with the Reference diskette. See the Avanstar Family Hardware Installation Guide for instructions. Check your application software for specific guidelines on assigning interrupts. Here are some general guidelines:  The IRQ(s) assigned to any Avanstar Xm (200m) adapters must not be used by any other device in the system.  Each Avanstar Xm (200m) adapter may be assigned a unique IRQ, or up to four Avanstar Xm (200m) adapters may share the same IRQ.  You can not select polled mode for the Avanstar ANDIS MAC for OS/2. The IRQs supported by the Avanstar Xm (200m) are as follows: 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 3. To add another adapter, repeat the instructions in step 1. You may install a maximum of four adapters. As each adapter is installed, another entry will be added to the "Installed Adapters" listbox below the previous entry. NOTE If more than one adapter is installed, the adapter at the top of the "Installed Adapters" listbox will be the adapter that was physically installed in the lowest-numbered slot, and this adapter will be referenced as Adapter number 1 in the "Parameters" menu shown in step 9 in section 1.4. The adapter that will be second from the top in the "Installed Adapters" listbox is the adapter that was physically installed in the next-to-the-lowest-numbered slot, and this adapter will be referenced as Adapter number 2 in the "Parameters" menu. This pattern continues for any additional adapters. 4. To remove an adapter from the "Installed Adapters" box, select the adapter and click "Remove Adapter". 5. To abort the driver configuration/installation process, click the "Cancel" button. 6. Click the "OK" button when the "Installed Adapters" box displays the correct parameters for each installed adapter. The driver and configuration files will be copied to the \IBMCOM\MACS and \AVXLAN directories on the drive which contains LAPS. 1.3.2 Avanstar Xi (200i) Configuration 1. Select Avanstar Xi (200i) in the "Select an Adapter to Install" listbox and click the "Install Adapter" button. The default values for Dual Port Address, I/O Address and IRQ will display in the "Installed Adapters" listbox. To change the values for an installed adapter, click on the adapter in the "Installed Adapters" listbox and follow the steps below. 2. Click on the arrow next to the "Dual Port Address" drop down listbox and select one of the supported addresses. We recommend a location of D0000 (hex), an area often-though not always-free of conflicts. Here are some general guidelines:  The dual port for an Avanstar Xi (200i) adapter must be installed within the first megabyte of the LAN Distance Connection Server's memory space.  Avanstar Xi (200i) adapters may not share address space with each other or with any other devices in the system. 3. Click on the arrow next to the "I/O Address" drop down listbox and select one of the supported addresses. Make sure that the I/O base address that you select matches the hardware switch settings. The I/O base address must be unique for each Avanstar Xi (200i) installed. See the Avanstar Family Hardware Installation Guide for instructions on setting the hardware switches. 4. Click on the arrow next to the "IRQ" drop down listbox and select one of the supported IRQs. An Avanstar Xi (200i) has no hardware switches for IRQ settings. Check your application software for specific guidelines on assigning interrupts. Here are some general guidelines:  Use an IRQ that is not used by any other non-Avanstar device in the computer.  Each Avanstar board may be assigned a unique IRQ, or up to four Avanstar boards may share the same IRQ.  You can not select polled mode for the Avanstar ANDIS MAC for OS/2. 5. To add another adapter, repeat the instructions in step 1. You may install a maximum of four adapters. The driver and configuration files will be copied to the \IBMCOM\MACS and \AVXLAN directories on the drive which contains LAPS. 1.4 Port Installation 1. Start the LAN Distance application by double-clicking the "IBM LAN Distance" icon. 2. Start the LAN Distance "Settings" Notebook application by clicking "Selected", then "Open as" on the "LAN Distance - Workstations" menu. 3. Click "Settings" to install the Avanstar ports and use the "Ports" tab in the "Settings" Notebook. This procedure is described in the LAN Distance Connection Server Guide. 4. Click the "Add..." button on the "MyWorkstation* - Settings" menu. 5. Select "Digi Intl. Avanstar Xi (200i) Port" or "Digi Intl. Avanstar Xm (200m) Port" and click "OK..." The default name for the LAN Distance Connection Server is "MyWorkstation". Depending on what other name you may have given the server, this menu could have a different name. 6. Click the "LAPS" (LAN Adapter Protocol Services) button. 7. From the "Configure Workstation" menu, select "Digi Intl. Avanstar Xi/m (200i/m) Port" from the "Network Adapters" window and click the "Add" button in the "Network Adapters" window for each Avanstar port to be installed. Note that each click of the "Add" button in the "Network Adapters" window will increment the number of times that the phrase "Digi Intl. Avanstar Xi/m (200i/m) Port..." will appear in the "Current Configuration" window. 8. Highlight the phrase "Digi Intl. Avanstar Xi (200i) Port..." or "Digi Intl. Avanstar Xm (200m) Port..." in the "Current Configuration" window. Then click "Edit". 9. When the "Parameters for Digi Intl. Avanstar Xi (200i) Port" or the "Parameters for Digi Intl. Avanstar Xm (200m) Port" menu appears, complete the requested information for that port before clicking the "OK" button. NOTES 1. You must specify a unique port name and a unique port number for each Avanstar port to be installed. 2. You must enter the same port number in the "Avanstar Xi/m (200i/m) Port number" field as the port number on the Avanstar external panel that your modem will be connected to. 3a. For Avanstar Xi (200i) adapters, the adapter number refers to the order in which the adapter was installed. For example, adapter number 1 refers to the first adapter that was installed. Hence, this is the first adapter in the "Installed Adapters" listbox in the menu shown in step 1 of section 1.3.2. 3b. For Avanstar Xm (200m) adapters, the adapter number is related to the slot number in which the adapter was physically placed. For example, adapter number 1 refers to the adapter that was put in the lowest-numbered slot. Hence, this is the first adapter in the "Installed Adapters" listbox in the menu shown in step 1 of section 1.3.1. Repeat steps 8 and 9 for each port in the "Current Configuration" window. 10. When you are done, click the "OK" button to exit the "Configure Workstation" menu. 11. Exit the "Settings" menus, saving the changes you made. 1.5 Assigning Ports to Modem Types 1. Click "Modems" in the "Settings" Notebook to assign each installed port to the type of modem that is connected to it. 2. Click the "Assign" button. 3. Select your modem type in the "Modem Title" window of the "MyWorkstation* - Settings" menu and click the "OK.." button. * The default name for the LAN Distance Connection Server is "MyWorkstation". Depending on what other name you may have given the server, this menu could have a different name. 4. Assign an installed port to the modem type connected to it by clicking the "Add..." button. 5. You may optionally enter the phone number in the following menu. Then click "OK". 6. Click "OK" in the following menu. 7. From the Modem Type - Settings menu shown in step 4: (a) Assign the remaining installed ports to the modem types connected to them by clicking the "Add.." button. (b) You can change the modem settings by clicking the "Change.." button. (c) You can delete an installed port assignment by clicking the "Delete" button. 8. Close the Modem Type - Settings menu to return to the "MyWorkstation* - Settings" menu. 9. Close the "MyWorkstation* - Settings" menu to exit the "Settings" Notebook, selecting "Yes" to save the new settings. The default name for the LAN Distance Connection Server is "MyWorkstation". Depending on what other name you may have given the server, this menu could have a different name. 10. Close the "LAN Distance - Workstations" menu. 11. Shut down and restart the system. 12. Double-click the IBM LAN Distance icon to start the LAN Distance software. Ports are now available for use by the LAN Distance application. Chapter 2 Reconfiguring or Removing the Driver Software To change the software parameters of an installed Avanstar adapter, do the following steps: 1. Make current the drive that LAPS is located on. 2. Go to the directory \AVXLAN off the root directory. 3. Type avxcfg to run the configuration utility. 4. Avanstar Xi (200i) To reconfigure the driver for an Avanstar Xi (200i) adapter, click on the adapter in the "Installed Adapters" listbox and follow the instructions in steps 2 through 7 in section 1.3.2 in Chapter 1. Avanstar Xm (200m) You can not change the configuration parameters of an Avanstar Xm (200m) with the driver-you can only view the parameters that were set with the Reference diskette and the Option Configuration diskette. Follow the instructions in the Avanstar Family Hardware Installation Guide to change the configuration parameters with the Reference diskette and the Option Configuration diskette. 5 To remove the device driver, click the "Remove Driver" button. This will remove the driver and associated support files from your system. You should also run the LAN Distance settings notebook and remove any ports that LAN Distance was using. These will be listed under the Ports tab of the settings notebook. 6. Click the "OK" button when the "Installed Adapters" box displays the correct parameters for each installed adapter. The configuration files will be updated accordingly. 7. Shutdown and restart the system. What to do if You Have Difficulty Symptom: Errors occur for the Avanstar adapter initialization during the boot phase prior to the appearance of the Workplace Shell. Solutions: 1. Be sure the external panel and the cable are attached. 2. Make sure that the I/O address switch settings for an Avanstar Xi (200i) match the address you selected when you configured the driver. If they do not match, you will need to either follow the instructions in the Avanstar Family Hardware Installation Guide to reset the switches or follow the instructions in Chapter 2 of this manual to reconfigure the I/O address. 3. There may be a dual port conflict. For an Avanstar Xi (200i), follow the instructions in Chapter 2 of this manual to change the dual port setting from its default of D0000. For an Avanstar Xm (200m), follow the instructions in the Avanstar Family Hardware Installation Guide to use the Reference diskette and the Option Configuration diskette to change the dual port setting from its default of D0000. Symptom: LAN Distance comes up and then locks up. Solution: There may be an interrupt conflict. For an Avanstar Xi (200i), follow the instructions in Chapter 2 of this manual to select another IRQ. For an Avanstar Xm (200m), follow the instructions in the Avanstar Family Hardware Installation Guide to use the Reference diskette and the Option Configuration diskette to select another IRQ. Symptom: The LAN Distance Connection Server does not answer the ring if it is dialed into. Solution: Make sure the answer mode is on in the LAN Distance "Settings" Notebook.
