TENNIS CUP II User's Manual Congratulations! You just bought another LORICIEL GAME! TENNIS CUP 2 is more than a game, it is the best Tennis simulation released to date. This software was developed to allow optimal use of the new capacities added to the GX 4000 and to the AMSTRAD CPC+ series. The animation, graphics and programming have been approached from a completely new angle. You can choose from 32 possible opponents, each with their own qualities, defects and tactics. In addition, you can use the edit facility to create an opponent and to adjust the difficulty level of the game. The innovative two-screen concept allows both players to see the game from their individual perspectives, so neither is handicapped. This feature makes you really feel like you are one of the on-screen players. Or you can play in the full screen mode in order to see both players. Every shot is possible : top spins, low returns, drop shots, forehands, backhands, smashes, volley shots, etc... But enqugh said about the game... Let's play LOADING INSTRUCTIONS FOR AMSTRAD CPC+ WITH CARTRIDGE Switch off your CPC+ or your console. Insert the "TENNIS CUP 2" cartridge into the cartridge port. Switch on your CPC+ or your console. For more information, consult the user's manual for your machine. CONTROLS TENNIS CUP 2 allows - a one-player game, with the computer as your opponent or - a two-player game. Player 1 uses a Digital Joystick (the most common model). The program has been designed to also operate with an Analog Joystick. If you have this type of joystick, Player 2 should use it. PLAYER 1 Digital Joystick connected to Joystick port 2. PLAYER 2 Digital Joystick connected to Joystick port 1 or Analog Joystick connected to Analog Joystick port. PAUSE Pause button, or press one time the P letter on your CPC + or the second fire button on the AMSTRAD joystick. ABANDON Pause button, or press two times the P letter on your CPC +. HOW TO PLAY TENNIS CUP You can use the joystick in two different modes, depending on how you use the Fire Button of the Joystick. If you move your Joystick without holding the Fire Button, the player will move in the direction of the joystick. If you move your Joystick while holding the Fire Button, you aim your shot in the direction of the joystick. To hit your shot, release the Fire Button. WITHOUT HOLDING THE FIRE BUTTON You can move your player in 8 directions, in order to position him where you want. DIAGONALLY TO STRAIGHT TO DIAGONALLY TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE NET THE RIGHT SIDE THE NET OF THE NET TO THE LEFT TO THE RIGHT DIAGONALLY TO THE BASELINE DIAGONALLY TO THE LEFT SIDE OF IN THE MIDDLE THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BASELINE OF THE COURT OF THE BASELINE NOTE : Moving the player may seem easy , but you must always be concerned about positioning your player in the right spot in order to correctly hit the ball. WHILE HOLDING THE FIRE BUTTON - Hitting the ball After setting your tactical position, you must think of the most effective shot that will allow you to score. When the ball arrives on the right side of the player, the program will automatically make him hit a forehand shot. When the ball arrives on his left side, it will make him hit a backhand shot. Once you are positioned, hold the Fire Button : the player is getting ready to hit. While holding the Fire Button, you can indicate a direction in order to aim your shot. When you release the Fire Button, you hit the ball... The possible shots you can hit depend on the position of your player on the court and on your opponent's position. In any case, by moving the Joystick to the left or to the right you are determining where you will hit the ball. To hit the ball straight, you must keep your Joystick in the central position. It is possible to program the spin and direction of your ball. WHEN YOU HIT THE BALL AFTER IT HAS BOUNCED IN YOUR COURT, YOU WILL PLAY A `BASELINE' GAME, SO THAT * If your opponent is at the far end of the court and you want to put spin on your ball, move the joystick forward or backward. If you don't want to spin the ball, just leave the joystick in the central position. When you move the joystick forward, you put top spin on the ball - so that it will bounce very low and fast. When you move the joystick backward, you put back spin on the ball - it will bounce very high and slowly and result in a 'drop shot.' TOP SPIN SHOT TOP SPIN SHOT TOPSPIN SHOT TO THE LEFT TO THE RIGHT FLAT SHOT FLAT SHOT FLAT SHOT TO THE LEFT TO THE RIGHT DROPSHOT DROPSHOT DROPSHOT TO THE LEFT TO THE RIGHT * If your opponent is at the net Here is a new shot: the lob. With this shot, the ball is much higher and it will be more difficult for your opponent to hit it back. WHEN YOU HIT THE BALL BEFORE IT BOUNCES IN YOUR COURT Your are hitting a volley shot. By moving the joystick forward or backward, you set the length of your volley shot. By keeping the joystick in the central position, your volley shot will be powerful. When you move the joystick forward, you hit a deep volley that will skim along the base line. When you move it backward, you hit a drop shot volley; the ball will bounce slackly just behind the net. This is one of the most efficient shots in tennis, but also one of the most difficult to achieve. DEEP VOLLEY DEEP VOLLEY DEEP VOLLEY TO THE LEFT STRAIGHT TO THE RIGHT MIDCOURT VOLLEY MIDCOURT VOLLEY MIDCOURT VOLLEY TO THE LEFT TO THE RIGHT DROP SHOT VOLLEY DROP SHOT VOLLEY DROP SHOT VOLLEY TO THE LEFT STRAIGHT TO THE RIGHT NOTE : When your opponent hits a lob to you when you are at the net, the ball is too high for you to hit a volley shot. Your only choice is to smash the ball to the left, to the right, or straight ahead. SERVING When you are pressing the Fire Button on your joystick, you are preparing the ball. You just have to release the Fire Button when you wish to hit the ball and serve. After a while, you will learn to master your service ; then you will be able to give special spins and directions to your shots. By moving the joystick to the left or to the right, the ball will go to the left or right limit of the service court. If you want your service to bounce in the center, just leave your joystick in the central position. By moving your joystick forward, your service will be more powerful. THE RULES OF TENNIS SCORING IN TENNIS SCORING A GAME Scoring in Tennis is different than that in any other sport. When scores are mentioned, the server's score is always given first, regardless of who is ahead in the game. A player needs to score at least four points to win a game and must win two points more than the opponent to signal the end of a game. * 0 points is called "Love" * The first point is called "15" * The second point is called "30" * The third point is called "40" * The winning point is called "game" When the players are scoring 40 to 40, the next one to win a point will score an ADVANTAGE. The Referee announces" ADVANTAGE ". If the same player wins the following point, he will score the game. If the score is tied, it is a DEUCE. SCORING A SET A set is completed when one of the players wins six games. Similar to scoring a game, a player must win two games in a row to win the set. If the players score a tied 6-6, it is a TIEBREAK. TIEBREAKERS The first player to win 7 points (counting by one's) wins the set if he leads by a margin of 2 points or more. The player who starts the TIE BREAK will only serve once from the right side of the court. Then each player will serve twice, first from the left side and then from the right side of the court. SCORING A MATCH The most common method of scoring matches for men and women tennis players is the best of three sets. The first player to win two sets wins the match. In many professional and even some amateur tournaments, the men play a best of five sets. SERVING THE BALL A legal serve must travel over the net and land within the service court diagonally across the serving position. Your opponent must let the ball bounce before returning your serve. As server, you have two chances to serve within the appropriate service court. If you miss, the shot is called a "fault". If you "fault" twice in a row, the opponent wins the point. Serves that hit the net and fall into the opponent's side of the court do not count as fault or a serve. POINTS AND PLAY *While you must wait until the ball bounces before you return a serve, you can hit any subsequent shots while the ball is still in the air. *If the ball bounces twice on your side of the court, your opponent wins the point. *If your return shot does not clear the net, your opponent wins the point. *If your return shot lands outside of the boundary area on the court (sidelines or baselines), your opponent wins the point. *If you touch the net or hit a return before the ball crosses the net, your opponent wins the point. *If you hit the ball more than once in trying to get it across the net, your opponent wins the point. SINGLES VS. DOUBLES *While the service area is the same in singles and doubles, the sideline boundary is wider in a doubles match. *The serve is alternated between teams (Team 1 serves the first game, Team 2 serves the second game), and between players on a team (If player 1 serves game 1, the teammate serves in game 3). *Players always receive serve on one side of the court. If player 1 receives serve on the right side of the court, that player will always receive the serves to that side of the court. Player 2 will receive the other serves. If the wrong player returns the service, the serving team wins the point. *After the serve, players can move about freely on the court and return balls at will. There is no obligation to alternate hits of the ball during a game. COURT SURFACES The court surface influences the speed and bounce of the ball. You can choose between slow surfaces (CLAY) or fast surfaces (HARDCOURT). Some players tire more quickly on certain kind of surfaces.
