\ Music Contest ][ is an international contest putting many songs in dir- /
/ ect competition. The concept is simple: the song getting the highest votes \
\ wins. The contest is divided into two divisions, 'veteran' and 'rookie' so /
/ that both experienced and beginning computer musician alike can compete. \
\ There is public voting so that the final results of the contest will re- /
/ flect the opinions of everyone. The voting system itself is very complex \
\ in order to prevent any cheating that might occur. All final totals will /
/ be checked and rechecked by several people to insure that they are all cor- \
| rect. The best prize that can be offered is the pride one feels in doing |
\ well in the contest. However, for those who would like something a little /
/ more tangible, there will be prizes such as: a sample library, books on \
\ music theory, and actual trophy's; all of which will be convieniently ship- /
/ ped right to your home. In addition, several of the best songs will be put \
\ onto audio CD and sold for around $10 (USA) each. The theme of this con- /
/ test is `effiency'. Despite its complexity, Music Contest ][ has been \
\ streamlined to provide you the best experience possible. Friendly competi- /
/ tion seems to bring out the best in everyone, and it is my personal hope \
\ that you have a lot of fun in this contest. /

// DIVISIONS OF THE CONTEST //
//////////////////////////////

/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/\_/

ROOKIE - this division is for the beginning computer musician who does not
want to have to compete with the more experienced musicians.
Voting will be stressed most on samples, since that is what begin-
ners seem to have the most trouble with. Technical details are
not as important, and originality is not considered as important
as form. This category should generally be for those who have
written fewer than 15 songs or so.

VETERAN - this division is for those musicians who are more experienced.
Voting will be stressed most on form and originality; it is
expected that at this point, the selection of good samples is
second nature. If you finished in the top 5 or 10 in Music Contest
1, then you might want to think about entering this division.

[DIVISIONS]

CORE - This is a pre-selected commitee of experienced musicians.
These judges will be responsible for all of the judging comments
given. Note: CORE judges are permitted to enter MC][, but not to
            vote on their own songs.
Currently, only a few judges are signed up. The following
list will be significantly changed in the following months:
                                       Krystall/Astek
                                    Necros/Psychic Monks
                                  Ryan Cramer/Renaissance
                                  Snowman/Binary Puppets
                                       Weasel/Trivium
REGULAR - This is the public voting category for those who have entered
MC][. Note: REGULAR judges are not permitted to vote on their own
            songs.
PUBLIC - This is the public voting category for those who have not and
will not enter Music Contest ][.

--

[HOW TO BECOME A 'REGULAR' OR 'PUBLIC' JUDGE]

First, fill out the JUDGE.TXT form (included in MC2RULES.TXT) and send
it to one of the locations mentioned in the form itself. Snowman will send
you a reply and give you a 6 digit VOTER-ID number.

--

[HOW TO VOTE]

When all of the songs are in at the end of the contest, a file named
MC2VOTE.ZIP will be distributed. All judges are required to download this
file. Inside MC2VOTE.ZIP will be a list of the judge ID numbers and the
songs each judge is to vote on. If you are a judge, you are to complete your
voting and return the form by the date specified in that archive.

--

[WHY ID NUMBERS?]

The reason I chose to use ID numbers is so that whenever a judge com-
pletes voting, he/she can upload his/her form easily. For example, if your
JUDGE-ID were 123456, you would upload your voting form as ##123456.ZIP. I
will be able to easily collect all of these forms since they can be uploaded
to any distro site listed. Using JUDGE-ID numbers also prevents others from
knowing who voted on what. In addition, having ID numbers prevents multiple
  votes by one person.

--

[HOW SONGS WILL BE JUDGED]

Form - flow, unity, and cohesiveness of the song; also covers use of
                 chords, harmony, and tonality
Samples - appropriateness in song, overusage, quality of sample
Subjective - the judge's overall impression of the song
Technical - covers everything from phrasing to transitions
Originality - does the song stand out from the others in some way?; could be
because of melody, format, music type, etc.

--

[VOTING CALCULATIONS] (optional reading: you don't have to understand this)

The following is a run down on how strong each type of judge's votes will be
  with relation to each other:

    3 - CORE judges
    2 - REGULAR judges
    1 - PUBLIC judges

The following outlines the breakdown on what is judged for each category:

    ROOKIE 30% - Samples
            20% - Form
            20% - Subjective
            15% - Originality
            15% - Technical

    VETERAN 25% - Form
            25% - Originality
            20% - Technical
            15% - Samples
            15% - Subjective

The winner in each division will be calculated by the following formula:

    In ENGLISH:

Take each attribute (Samples, Form, etc.) and multiply times its %
strength (0.3, 0.15, etc.). Do this for each type of judge (CORE,
STANDARD, and PUBLIC), and multiply each type of judge by its relative
strength (CORE = 3, REGULAR = 2, PUBLIC = 1) and then add all three
together to get the total. Do this for every song entered and compare
all the totals. The song with the highest total wins.

    In PASCAL:

Ct = CORE judge totals for individual song
St = STANDARD judge totals for individual song
Pt = PUBLIC judge totals for individual song

      rookie:

      [(Ct_Samples * 0.3) + (Ct_Form * 0.2) + (Ct_Subjective * 0.2) +
        (Ct_Originality * 0.15) + (Ct_Technical * 0.15)] * 3 +
      [(St_Samples * 0.3) + (St_Form * 0.2) + (St_Subjective * 0.2) +
        (St_Originality * 0.15) + (St_Technical * 0.15)] * 2 +
      [(Pt_Samples * 0.3) + (Pt_Form * 0.2) + (Pt_Subjective * 0.2) +
        (Pt_Originality * 0.15) + (Pt_Technical * 0.15)] * 1 = TOTAL

      veteran:

      [(Ct_Form * 0.25) + (Ct_Originality * 0.25) + (Ct_Technical * 0.2) +
        (Ct_Samples * 0.15) + (Ct_Subjective * 0.15)] * 3 +
      [(St_Form * 0.25) + (St_Originality * 0.25) + (St_Technical * 0.2) +
        (St_Samples * 0.15) + (St_Subjective * 0.15)] * 2 +
      [(Pt_Form * 0.25) + (Pt_Originality * 0.25) + (Pt_Technical * 0.2) +

[THE PLAN]

Each BBS has a program that collects the names of all MC][ entries cur-
rently online. Periodically, this list of names will be sent to Snowman's
file coordinator who will figure out which songs each BBS needs, and which
songs each BBS has that they need to spread. All entries will be posted on
wasp.eng.ufl.edu. This is the official World Headquarters for Music Con-
    test ][.
