FILE: lcycle_11.zip: lcycle Quake2 mini-mod AUTHOR: _JoJo DATE: 01/08/98 1815 Hola amigos. While we wait for decent deathmatch maps to become available, we are having to deal with servers cycling endlessly through the Id singleplayer maps. Some of these are really big, and some of them are really boring. However, some of them rock. With this in mind, here is the primitive first version of a mod for server admins, updated for better code and compatibility with Quake2 versions 3.09 and above (current version is 3.10). Also, it has been discovered that the mod works, unmodified, with custom maps as long as they live in basq2/maps or lcycle/maps. If there are execptions please get in touch! INSTRUCTIONS 1. Unzip this file into your Quake2 directory. 2. Go into the lcycle directory and modify the motd.txt file to whatever you want people entering your server to see. Remember that lines over 40 characters will get chopped by Q2, and that messages over about 600 characters will possibly fuck with the game. YHBW. 3. Edit the cycle.txt file so that each line contains the name of a level in the cycle, with no blank lines. It starts off with some levels I personally like playing on, but of course your mileage will vary, so cut loose. This will (I guess) work with third-party levels when they do arrive too. I'll test it with that re-vamped DM6 version to make sure. 3. When invoking Q2, use +set game lcycle as well as whatever other server options you use. And remember, dedicated servers are honest servers :) ISSUES 1. The server will start wherever you set it through Q2, then after one level will switch into the cycle. Sorry, I'm tired, I'll fix it later. 2. This will eventually turn into a decent deathmatching mod for server ops, something along the lines of the clanring thing. Stay tuned. 3. I realise there has been some paranoia about trojan-horse DLLs for Quake2, but let's have a little perspective here. We all download heaps of executable stuff off the net every month and don't give it another thought. Mostly, this is because we get it from a reputable source, or can easily trace the perpetrator if something goes wrong. I've uploaded this to cdrom.com, but apart from that, the version on jra.jra.com.au is the only other legit source. I've included the source code anyway, so you can rebuild it from first principles if you don't trust me :) 4. I haven't taken all the monsters and shit out yet, even though you don't see them in DM, or use a bunch of other stuff either. I'll trim that soon, I swear. The result is, the DLL is way bigger than it has to be, but be patient eh? YOU? Yeah. _JoJo is Joel Gluth, currently working for JRA Studios as a programmer and designer of ITV 'n' stuff. Check out the lcc page at http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/9069/index.html : SumFuka, for having the motd in his tutorial :) : Hook, and others on au.undernet #quake, for making me use a free compiler. No thanks to : Microsoft, for making such cheap, effective compilers. RIiiiiiiight. : Entil'zha. Stay out of my way, asshole. Love 'n' Rockets, _JoJo.
