This was my first time leading a large-scale project like this and I'm not even that used to composing MIDIs, but I still wanted to try. I did not expect this project to turn out so well, and have the people on board that it had. I really wanted to make this accessible to both veteran composers and brand new composers too, and I really hope no one felt overshadowed or outdone coming to the end of this project. I truly believe every single person that contributed to this did an amazing job. My goal for this project was also to bring different people together with different views and interpretations on what Cyberdreams is and how it feels to them, and I hope that reflects well in the diversity that this pack has. The enthusiasm people had for this was really heartwarming for me, the original deadline was actually the beginning of September but by the middle of June, over half of the MIDIs were already finished, so I decided to move it forward to the beginning of August instead. My hopes and expectations for this project were blown out of the water. Thank you to everyone who contributed, I love you all, and thank you for listening. It means the world to all of us. On 'This is Basically Still Suffering' for MAP14: "I love my groovy dark tracks. I wanted to make a MIDI that gets under the player's skin a little, pick away at their psyche whilst they're running around pressing switches and dodging rockets. The very obvious 'The Dave D. Taylor Blues' reference is a little bit silly, but I hope people get a chuckle out of it. On 'Myoclonus' for MAP23 "I had no idea how to approach making a MIDI for Map 23. It is the longest map in the set by quite a bit so I wanted to make that long elevator ride all the way up and all the way down feel dreamy, but also quite sinister. So I took a subdued and patient approach to composing the track, letting the melodies stick in the players' minds and changing it up just before it starts to get boring. I will admit to having a weakness in composing longer melodic tracks, I'm definitely more of an ambience composer and I think it might show here, but I hope that this is something that people can vibe to on the long ride to the top." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emperor S P O O N, on 'Operation Cyber Cheeks Slap Complete' for the Intermission: Thought it'd be fitting to have the intermission music feel like you just finished a race, so I used the Mario Kart 64 Finish Line diddy as inspiration. You can also think of that whistle as the cyber squealing if you have a funny sense of humor. On 'Just a Little Silly' for the Text Screens: "I felt that Cyberdreams, as a whole, is a pretty silly wad. I recognize it as incredibly advanced for its time, but that doesn't really change how it likes to present itself which is, generally, unserious. That doesn't detract from the wad's genuinely inventive gameplay, however, as far removed from my tastes as it is as I'm writing this. I tried to reflect that with the text screen music as it is, inevitably, the closest we got to the wad authors speaking to us. Looking back, in my opinion, I think my music doesn't really fit well with the other tracks in this midi pack as my midis here pride themselves in their own memery rather than appreciating the role they're filling. Not much I can do about it now, though. Maybe next time I can do better." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Peccatum Mihzamiz, on 'La chevre unijambiste sur le toit' for MAP27: "With this track I challenged myself to use the same harmonic material in different ways. Combined with purposefully ambiguous rhythms at times I got the dreamy, otherworldly quality I was looking for. Really happy to have been a part of this inspiring project!" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cammy, on 'Turbulence Makes Me Feel Alive' for MAP25: "I played Cyberdreams with Jimmy's Jukebox a while ago and was really impressed by how clever and resourceful this whole wad is, but map25 stuck with me the most because of how hard it kicked my ass. I'm glad I got to musically repay it for the journey of self-improvement it took me on. High stakes, high execution, and a bite-sized runtime - these were things I wanted to invoke with my midi. As usual, I wrote a small number of intense musical setpieces early on and spent most of the rest of the composing process trying to find out how to connect them, but in this case the pace was so high that I didn't really need to do much connecting at all, and just let the ideas zip to and fro even if the transitions were sudden. Hence the title, really. I admit I may have gone too far - this is by far the most unrepentantly batshit track I've ever written - but I had fun doing it, and hopefully you'll have fun listening! Major sources of inspiration included the Garage Battle theme from FEAR 1, "Symphony" from Guilty Gear Strive, and the mini-boss theme from Zelda Twilight Princess." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DuckReconMajor, on "Stirring from the Cyberdream" for MAP13: "My first completed MIDI! and for my favorite wad! People come out of Cyberdreams feeling different things, for me it's whimsy. Sometimes something frivolous can end up leaving a lasting impression. At least this is how i justify breaking out the glockenspiel heh. In all seriousness this is why I feel some connection to MAP13. An odd and non-descript chamber. Is this some kind of experiment? Have you been thrown in the trash? You and the cyberdemons are "(Four) Characters in Search of an Exit" Thank you to those who gave help and guidance, especially Pecca, Phoenyx, and Raven" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WASDBee, on "Cyberthemes" for MAP01: "I went for a "just left the starting town in an RPG" kind of vibe, inspired by games series like Pokémon, Ys, Final Fantasy, etc. I made it a bit too long because sometimes the cyber just wants to wander around and splash in the water, which is relatable." On "Take It to the Bridge" for MAP03: "I love this map! It manages to make repetitive tasks fun, and has that perfect balance between being tense and being relaxing. I started off trying to go with a vision of a stereotypical Morricone style western movie soundtrack meets Touhou, to suit the 2 cybers facing off across the bridge, but then the percussion went its own way and the mood had to change to fit. I think it came out better as a result." On "Welcome Back, Cyberdreamer" for MAP31: "Keeping flowers is just one way to help local bees. Making sure your garden has a source of fresh clean water can also help immeasurably, even if it's just a shallow dish of water (filled with pebbles so that they can't drown). Also I have no idea what to write about this track. The map is awesome though, probably my favourite from the wad. It's a unique puzzle, and for me at least, it manages to be silly and fun but also intense and immersive. I hope the music captures the vibes that I got from the map. It's in 5/4 because I couldn't decide between 3/4 and 2/4 so I picked both" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- wallh4x, on "EUROBEAT HITS" for MAP05: "90s DOOM music means two things to me: bonehead MIDI Rock and Technotronic era silly house and eurodance (hitthefloor.mid) so I tried to mix the two into something simple and fun for era-appropriate rocket dodging." On 'Hella Juice' for MAP09: "As with my other track I wanted to channel an authentic 90s MIDI experience and ended up with this proto-Linkin Park bridge." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Xulgonoth, on "Updog Funk" for MAP22: "Well, my baby works in a hot dog stand While making them hot dogs as fast as she can Up steps a cat and yells "Don't be slow And get me two hot dogs ready to go" Hot dog, she's my baby Hot dog, drives me crazy Hot dog, don't mean maybe Well, you oughta see my baby at the hot dog stand Well, in the cool of the evening when the sun goes down All the chicks and the cats all gather around They order hot dogs and red soda pop Then head down the road to a hep cat hop Hot dog, she's my baby Hot dog, drives me crazy Hot dog, don't mean maybe Well, you oughta see my baby at the hot dog stand Well, in the cool of the evening when the sun goes down The chicks and the cats all gather around They order hot dogs and red soda pop Then head down the road to a hep cat hop Hot dog, she's my baby Hot dog, drives me crazy Hot dog, don't mean maybe Well, you oughta see my baby at the hot dog stand Hot dog, she's my baby Hot dog, drives me crazy Hot dog, I don't mean maybe Well, you oughta see my baby at the hot dog stand Hot dog Hot dog Hot dog Hot dog" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- decino, on "Vine Did It Better" for MAP17: "vineboom.wav" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- besus, on "Bedside Cabinet" for MAP04: "Disappointed myself idk im sick of this midi i felt like if i left this slot for whoever else theyd do a much better job so theres that. feels like its a pretty low effort midi. when i tried to throw more effort at it it didnt sound better it stayed almost the same for like most of july so idk. tho some people said they liked it so im glad they did." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fumingbow639067, on "Nightmares of Bloody Brutalist Brown" for MAP21: "I found that out of all the levels of Cyberdreams, I felt drawn to this level. The visuals for it, mixing just such a variety of browns from the lighter woods to the dark metal pillars and the cyberdemons just blended in so naturally. The positioning of them being above the player had the effect of not only physically increasing the difficulty by having their rocket explosions so difficult to dodge, but also perceptually. The cyberdemons tower over you, three at a time and the only way to tackle them is by running under crushers, practically hugging the wall as the explosions pile up behind you for you to run into a tight little room to hit a skull switch. The blood stained wall barricading the exit much alike the bloodshed of doomguy's failed attempts to leave this unusual form of hellscape. The intro where you have to run past all 6 cybers, getting a view of the arena you'll enter, knowing what's ahead of you, it really builds up your nerves. The map knows damn well about how brutal it is, as it provides a brief respite before stepping upon the exit. A dimly lit tunnel with a little flowery light pattern flickering, with a lovely little painting to stare upon before making your escape, however interacting with the painting is a reminder of how you most certainly aren't done with this wad. Such a map needed a similarly brutal midi. The midi I made is rather out of place in this set, but within the context of my map it fits as well as I could've hoped. It's duration extends beyond the map's length so that those who can't succeed first try have more music to hear, as it shifts in moods to capture the feeling of retrying on this map. The midi mixes segments of overwhelming the listener with calmer, much more empty parts to match the map's gameplay and to provide a mix of feeling the raw brutality of this map and acceptance of it, to calm down and focus on the task at hand, or to merely plan ahead and think about upcoming struggles. I tried a mix of clashing elements and distortion of pre-existing elements of this midi, interrupting the more soothing low synths with an abrupt, and somewhat wonky piano and of course those repeated 4 guitar chords that over time become more and more off, with more random and wonky elements. Afterwards I felt it fitting to provide the player with some more slow and calm piano, yet it still feels somewhat dissonant and not particularly soothing to hear. The human elements, that being breathing and slight singing, were slightly influenced by c418's underrated masterpiece: "Seven People Locked In A Pitch Black Mausoleum". The track ends more calmly as the map itself does, fitting the mood of sitting listening as the crushers slide up and down while waiting on that damn bloody wall lowering and the trudge towards the exit platform, with the piano rolling up and down acting as the conclusion to beating this mighty beast. As for the instruments, the Bass Guitar and Pad 6 were chosen as they were the most comparable to the building blocks of this map: wood and metal, the way they sounded felt far more like these materials than the other choices available to me. I am glad to have been accepted into this project and I hope to have honoured the design choices taken by this incredible map." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hebonky, on 'The Stars' Studying Gaze Ever Eastward' for MAP28: "Hammered this out at midnight while delirious never having used sekaiju before, so had to learn on the spot :/, mostly inspired by the relaxing eerie-ness of watching space documentaries at midnight, I feel the midsection is a tad too quiet in game, and I added a backing thump in the second half for more gravitas, all weirdness is unintentionally intentional" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MegaSphere, on 'Unholy Trinity' for MAP10: "Tempo is set to 333 BPM and Time Signature is set to 3/4. That's the gimmick. Functionally it's just 111 BPM in 12/8 time." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
